Thus, Hatteras Village is located on Hatteras Island. These villages offer ocean or sound views, and sometimes both - the Atlantic Ocean runs parallel to Route 12, the only road in and out of Hatteras Island. A drive through the Island offers travelers miles of beauty and undeveloped landscape. There is water on the east and west side of the highway. Yes, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is open seasonally for self-guided climbs. It has 257 steps from the ground to the balcony level, equal to climbing a 12-story building. The narrow stairs have a handrail only on one side, two-way traffic, and a landing every 31 steps.

Probably not an all-day museum, but some really interesting artifacts and exhibits. A visit to the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and the Bodie Island Lighthouse is a must in the summer.
Be sure to stay in the left-hand lane when driving to the museum. Bear to the right, and you`ll end up in line for the Ocracoke Island ferry.
