Yes, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is open seasonally for self-guided climbs. It has 257 steps from the ground to the balcony level, equal to climbing a 12-story building. The narrow stairs have a handrail only on one side, two-way traffic, and a landing every 31 steps.

on Hatteras Island. Did you know that you can also visit the first-ever lifesaving station in Rodanthe? The Avon
Fishing Pier is a neat place to watch hard-core anglers get their catch of the day. While in Buxton, explore and
hike
the Buxton Woods Nature Trail. Right in Frisco is the Frisco Native American Museum as well as the Graveyard of the
Atlantic Museum. Driving a little further south past all the villages of Hatteras Island, you can take a nice ferry

At the end of Hatteras Village is the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum. Not an all-day museum, but some interesting
artifacts and exhibits. A visit to the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and the Bodie Island Lighthouse is necessary in the
summer.
Be sure to stay in the left-hand lane when driving to the museum. Bear to the right, and you will
end
up in line for the Ocracoke Island ferry.
