Yes, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is open seasonally for self-guided climbs. It has 257 steps from the ground to the balcony level, equal to climbing a 12-story building. The narrow stairs have a handrail only on one side, two-way traffic, and a landing every 31 steps.

There are several attractions on Hatteras Island; thus, it is difficult to pick just one. Visiting the different villages is an attraction in itself. You will find each one with its unique character. In Frisco, you will find the Frisco Native American Museum. At the end of Hatteras Village is the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum. Not an all-day museum, but some interesting artifacts and exhibits. A visit to the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and the Bodie Island Lighthouse is necessary in the summer.

Be sure to stay in the left-hand lane when driving to the museum. Bear to the right, and you will end up in line for the Ocracoke Island ferry.
