Hatteras Island is unique from its neighboring Outer Banks communities because it is comprised of seven different villages; going south (in geographical order) are Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, Buxton, Frisco, and Hatteras Village. Thus, Hatteras Village is located on Hatteras Island. These villages offer ocean or sound views, and sometimes both - the Atlantic Ocean runs parallel to Route 12, the only road in and out of Hatteras Island. A drive through the Island offers travelers miles of beauty and undeveloped landscape. There is water on the east and west side of the highway. Stop and explore the features and offerings of the Island. Visitors will find that they are somewhere special – the majority of Hatteras Island businesses are locally owned and operated.
