A Brief History Of Kill Devil Hills

Of all the historic towns on the Outer Banks, Kill Devil Hills is the oldest. Kill Devil Hills is the heart of the Outer Banks and the "central hub" for many Outer Banks visitors because of its prime location that`s between it all.

The area`s unique name comes from the brand of rum found during the colonial period said to be strong enough to "kill the devil". Forever marking its place in history in 1903 as the location of the Wright Brothers` innovation in flight, The Wright Brothers National Memorial is located in this popular vacation spot, where the monument sits atop "Kill Devil Hill".

Kill Devil Hills FAQ

There is so much to do in Kill Devil Hills! Being the most populated town on the Outer Banks, Kill Devil Hills offers easy access to plenty of eateries up and down Croatan Hwy, shopping, the Wright Brothers National Memorial (home of the historic first flight), miniature golf, hiking, and even bowling.

Of course, the best activity is to enjoy the sand and water on either the Atlantic Ocean or the sound. The water allows for swimming, body boarding, and stand-up paddle boarding.

Kill Devil Hills is close to Kitty Hawk to the north and Nags Head to the south.

Kill Devil Hills is the home of the first flight of the Wright Brothers. In the heart of Kill Devil Hills is the Wright Brothers Memorial and monument which is located at the exact take-off spot. Visitors can walk up (or run!) to the monument and gaze out to the beautiful beaches of the Outer Banks. The Dare County Regional Airport, a small airfield that was instrumental in World War II, displays photos, artifacts, and documents related to its wartime history. The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum, a maritime archive with nautical history exhibits and the mysterious shipwreck history of the Outer Banks, is an interesting site for enthusiasts as well.

There is plenty that is permitted on the beaches, but we would like to provide a friendly reminder to not enter the water when the Red Flags are flying. Also, bonfires are prohibited on the beach in Kill Devil Hills and fireworks are prohibited on the Outer Banks. Note that between Memorial Day and Labor Day, dogs are not permitted on Kill Devil Hills public beach between the hours of 9:00 am and 6:00 pm. At all other times, dogs must be on a leash.

There are two ways to get to the Outer Banks - driving and flying. The closest international airport is in Norfolk, VA (ORF). After landing in Norfolk and upon arrival in North Carolina, you will head south on NC-168 and US-158 continuing over the Wright Brothers Memorial Bridge. Stay straight at the NC12 turn and continue south on Croatan Hwy through the town of Kitty Hawk and the next town you come to will be Kill Devil Hills.

The most popular time to book a Kill Devil Hills vacation rental is the summer. Summer on the Outer Banks has the warmest months of the year and allows for the most sun. With this comes the days that are mostly filled with other guests.

The spring and fall, while cooler, give some great beach days where you can still enjoy the sun. In addition, during these seasons, the roads, stores, and restaurants are less crowded.

During the winter months, the weather is cooler and there are fewer visitors in town. However, the winter provides peace and tranquility on the secluded beaches and there are still sunshine-filled days. In Kill Devil Hills, there are a good number of locals who live there year-round, but any time is still a wonderful time to visit.
