You can enjoy fantastic shell collecting among quaint, less public seashores, especially in the off-season months. Duck Town Park & Boardwalk offers a tranquil environment for top annual events, including the Duck Jazz Festival. Although travelers to the area should have sound-side views on their must-do list, outdoor adventures aren`t limited to scenic waterfronts. Some of the Outer Banks` most fine dining and eclectic shopping can be found in town.

 Duck FAQ

Duck is along the northern Outer Banks of North Carolina, between the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the Currituck Sound to the west. It is the northernmost town in Dare County with its north border on the Corolla (Currituck County) line. To the south, Duck`s neighbor is the town of Southern Shores.

Besides the sheer natural beauty of the town, there are many reasons to vacation in Duck. It is a small town but contains a sizable number of Duck vacation rentals. There are plenty of local shops and delicious restaurants in "downtown Duck" easily accessed by the waterfront Duck boardwalk (nearly a mile long). This boardwalk also takes you to Duck Town Park where you can find a playground, kayak launch, and amphitheater. In the summer, there are live concerts and the Jazz Festival in October. If wine is your thing, Duck has multiple establishments to enjoy wine tastings and to purchase a few bottles. In Duck you will also find Aqua Spa. For those wanting pampering and relaxation, this is the perfect place for you. Schedule a massage, facial or mani/pedi to complement your vacation.

With its easy access to the Currituck Sound, watersports are extremely popular in Duck. Duck has places where you can rent kayaks, surfboards, standup paddle boards, body boards, and several places to buy yourself a float to hang out in the water and catch some rays. If you prefer dry land activities, find the maritime forest for an exhilarating hike with amazing views of the sound.

Because of the sound front boardwalk and the spacious sidewalk all through the stretch of Duck, you can access almost everything you need via walking or a bicycle. Walk/bike from your KEES vacation rental and go shopping, grab a meal, and even an ice cream cone!

Duck is conveniently located close to most other towns of the Outer Banks.

Lifeguards are on duty from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. between May 1 and October 31. The Town contractor maintains lifeguard stations at various locations throughout the summer in addition to ATV and truck patrols. Please heed words of caution, advisories, and/or the flying of red (no swimming) flags. They are issued for your safety!

Neighborhoods and HOAs have beach access points that are not maintained by the Town of Duck. They are only available to Duck residents, renters, and their guests. None of the accesses have showers. Also, Duck Town Park provides a sound access point for parking and kayak launching.

There are two ways to get to the Outer Banks - driving and flying. The closest international airport is in Norfolk, VA (ORF). After landing in Norfolk, you will then head south on NC-168 and US-158 where you will drive over the Wright Brothers Memorial Bridge. When you get to the road signs pointing to NC12 north, you will turn left. Continue on Hwy 12 N (also known as Ocean Trail) and you will get to the quaint town of Duck. (If you go further north, you will eventually get to Corolla.) If you choose to go on NC 12 south, it will take you to the towns of Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, and Nags Head.

Distance from other towns/attractions:
Corolla: about 16 miles
Southern Shores: about 3 miles
Kitty Hawk: about 6 miles
Wright Brothers Memorial: about 12 miles
Cape Hatteras Lighthouse: about 70 miles
Downtown Manteo: about 26 miles
Grandy: about 24 miles

The most popular time to book a Duck vacation is the summer. Summer on the Outer Banks has the warmest months of the year and contains the most sunshine. With this comes the days that are mostly filled with other visitors. The spring and fall, while cooler, gives some really great beach days. In addition, during these seasons, the roads, stores, and restaurants are the least crowded. During the winter months, the weather is cooler and there are fewer people in town. Also, many businesses close during the winter to give their teams time for some rest. However, the winter provides peace and tranquility and there are still sunshine-filled days. The Outer Banks does not get much snow, but now and then some flurries will show up. Keep an eye on the weather if you are visiting Duck in the winter!
